FRISKY MERMAID®
SONGWRITING CONTEST GUIDELINES
Updated 10/24/06
LEARNING AND
NETWORKING ATMOSPHERE The songwriting contest has many purposes. The
primary purpose is to create a productive atmosphere where songwriters learn
from and network with other songwriters and those interested in songwriting.
INDIVIDUALS OR TEAMS Songs may be written by individuals or teams.
SONGWRITER PRESENCE For a song to be entered the song writer must be
present. Songwriters who are also students only have to be present for the
performance and will be allowed to have their song performed early in the
contest if requested. Student contestants must provide proof of their
student status. In the event a song has multiple writers only one of the
songwriters has to be present.
LYRICS & CHORDS Contests are asked (not required) to prepare written
lyrics and chords to present to judges prior to their performance to aid in
the judging process. Such will be returned to the songwriter at the end of
the night.
GENRES Songs may be presented in any musical genre.
OBSCENE LYRICS Songs with profanity or obscene lyrics will not be
allowed.
JUDGES Judges shall be selected by Frisky Mermaid staff. There shall
be no specific number of judges. The number shall be determined each week by
Frisky Mermaid depending on circumstances.
JUDGING PARAMETERS Judging parameters and score sheets shall be
provided to the individual judges prior to the contest. Scoring shall be at
each judge’s discretion. Songs shall never be judged by audience applause
although audience response to a song during the performance may be used as a
parameter. Songs are a combination of lyrics and musical arrangements, each
with great importance. The overall totality or end product is what is to be
judged. This is not a poetry contest.
RESPECT TO JUDGES Contestants who do not win are expected to be
professional and respectful to judges. Otherwise they will be disqualified
and will not be allowed to compete in subsequent contests.
COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT Contestants are encouraged to have their songs
copyrighted as soon as possible. Frisky Mermaid management will cooperate
fully with authorities in cases where someone fraudulently uses the work of
others.
SONG SUBJECTS Song subjects shall be determined and provided by
Frisky Mermaid. All songwriters, musicians, or interested individuals are
encouraged to submit suggestions of subjects to be added to the list. All
song subjects are to be interpreted in a very general way to encourage
variation in the final products although songs with little or no relation to
the topic may be disqualified.
REPEATED ENTRY OF A SINGLE SONG Songs may be entered in multiple
contests provided that the content of the song applies to the subject of the
subsequent contests and that the song has not placed in a previous contest.
QUICK SETUP Contestants are expected to be able to set up for
performance in one minute. Please tune your instruments prior to coming to
stage.
ORDER OF PERFORMANCE Frisky Mermaid shall determine the order of
performances as it sees fit. This determination may be made by management,
judges, or emcee. Determination of order may also vary week to week
depending on circumstances at that time.
RECORDING Frisky Mermaid may record song performances as
documentation for the benefit of the songwriter. Frisky Mermaid and all
others shall have no right to reproduce or publish without the written
permission of the songwriter or songwriters.
